About Expensive Cables

At some point, after you’ve heard a whole lot of TOTL cables. You’ll come to a few realisations.

The general stuff

• Ensure you're using the right equipment tier. Cables are the last mile in maximizing your setup, providing those last few percent of sonic refinement.
• Consider pairing. A knowledgeable person asks the right questions, such as "What does this pair well with?" Cables are like fine wine; they can enhance any experience, but the ideal combination can induce euphoria.
• Most top-of-the-line cables sound excellent. Good is not enough at these price points.
• It's often challenging to determine which TOTL cable is superior without a proper A/B comparison.
• Everything should be evaluated against a standard reference cable. Is the new option better than the reference? If so, what and by how much? What is the cost difference compared to the reference? Is the improvement worth the additional expense?

The touchy stuff

• I don't understand why some can't hear the differences that are so apparent to me. I recognize the changes, and I know they are real. It seems implausible to me that one could convincingly hallucinate these distinctions for years on end. Yet, I've met others who are genuinely puzzled by it.
• Audio perception varies from person to person. In blind tests with three listeners, they might be in sync, but then a fourth could hear something entirely different.
• When it comes to objective testing of cables, I'm at a bit of a loss. I do have some decent equipment, but the measurements I obtain are rather crude. They don't explain why two IEMs can have the same tuning yet sound worlds apart. With cables, I’m not sure where to begin, so I rely on my ears to pick up on the nuances. Ultimately, evaluating cables is more art than science.
• I'm uncertain if the concept of burning in cables is legitimate. I can confidently say that burning in DAPs, DACs, amps, and certain IEMs or headphones makes a difference. However, I can't say the same for cables. I've heard from seasoned professionals who have spent years turning wires into audio cables that you should burn in your cables like everything else.
• Ego plays a significant role here. If I’ve dropped $3,000 on a cable, I'm compelled to defend that decision to the end. This tendency isn't exclusive to audio cables; it spans everything from golf clubs to bicycles.
• In the end, these are just my opinions. I often borrow cables from friends to test and share my thoughts. I also purchase the gear I enjoy and discuss my experiences. I am wrong most of the time. Just ask my wife.

The practical stuff

• I use an all-BA IEM for testing cables, specifically the 64 Audio U18T paired with the M12 module. The level of detail and clarity is exceptional, and I find that all-BA sets reveal significant shifts when the audio chain changes.
• I opt for flagship-level players for a simple reason—testing a high-end cable with a low-end or mid-tier source doesn’t make sense.
• In my view, there are three tiers of audio cables: entry-level, mid-tier, and top-of-the-line (TOTL). Most people won’t need anything beyond mid-tier cables, and there are some excellent options that I personally use and highly recommend. The TOTL cables cater to discerning audiophiles that have trouble sleeping knowing their system is not performing at the highest order.
• Technical perfection is not a good thing. The most technical rendition of music is often the most boring.
• We’re searching for the magic sauce in the TOTL cable. The reason why you should be paying most people’s monthly salary for a cable. If you cannot find it. Don’t buy it.
• When maximising, little details better. The interconnect, USB cables. I wasn’t convinced of the USB part until I tested it myself.

Back to general stuff, but not cable specific.

• There’s no such thing as perfect gear. That’s why I have a drawer full of players, amps, cables, IEMs, and tips. Each component serves a purpose—extensions, warmth, airiness, reference quality, timbre—and I mix and match them for variety, which leads us to the next point.
• A single “endgame setup” is both silly and poor advice for most people. Our senses thrive on variety, and while some individuals can indeed stick with one system for years, they are more the exception than the norm. A better approach for most is to embrace variety—different IEM tunings, sources, and cables. Personally, I find entry-level gear to be generally lacking and often a waste of money. It’s also worth noting that you don’t need to own only TOTL IEMs; that brings me to the next point.
• Hoarding is real. I have a bag for cables, one for IEMs, and another for players and amps. Once these spaces are full, I'm compelled to sell items to make room for new acquisitions.
