Dethonray Clarinet

The Dethonray is a compact $200 DAC/amp featuring dual AKM 4493S chips and unspecified op-amps. The company takes pride in its power architecture, which provides a pitch-black background. It offers various inputs, including USB-C, coaxial (3.5mm), and optical, catering to users living like it’s 1999. Output options include 3.5mm and 4.4mm, along with a separate USB-C port for charging.

You can customize the sound signature by uploading different firmware versions, though I can’t recall their names at the moment. After listening to the pre-order version, I found the upper mids to be somewhat forward, bordering on shouty. My impressions are based on the update released about three weeks later.

USB Input

The AKM sound is smooth, with rounded notes that are tonally rich and a noticeable bass rumble. This style is often preferred for mandopop and cantopop, but I personally find it lacking, as everything sounds somewhat artificial. The capabilities of high-end IEMs are not fully showcased. However, I think it would work well for entry-level IEMs.

Coaxial Input

This is where things change dramatically. Clarity improves significantly, with well-defined bass and higher resolution. The dynamics feel solid and, while it remains smooth, it’s not distracting. If you had told me this device cost five times more, I would have believed you.

If all AKM products sounded like this, I would be a very happy customer. I keep a Fiio M15 because it’s one of the best-sounding AKM devices, but in my opinion, the Clarinet has surpassed the M15.

I still wonder why Dethonray didn’t create a fancier shell and sell this for $600. To put it simply, everything Dethonray claims in its marketing material is true: it has a dark background, a smooth, velvety sound, effective shielding, good volume control, and firmware for sound tuning—plus it connects to a variety of devices. However, what they didn't mention is that it sounds like a $1,000 product for just $200. That said, you must use the coaxial input to unlock this super power.

ここで状況は劇的に変わります。明瞭度が大幅に向上し、低音がはっきりと定義され、解像度も高くなります。ダイナミクスも良好で、滑らかさを保ちながらも気を散らすことはありません。もしこのデバイスが5倍の価格だと言われたら、私は信じただろうと思います。

もしすべてのAKM製品がこのような音であれば、私は非常に満足な顧客になるでしょう。私はFiio M15を所有していますが、これは最も音質の良いAKMデバイスの一つです。しかし、私の意見では、クラリネットはM15を上回っています。
